Sheet metal is fed into these dies, either manually or mechanically, and presses apply the necessary pressure to produce finished or semi-finished parts.
Manufacturing dies are developed through a combination of computer-aided design (CAD) and skilled craftsmanship. They are crafted to meet exacting standards and are costly due to the precision required. However, they are invaluable in mass production, allowing for high production rates with consistent quality and dimensional accuracy.
The Importance of Tool and Die in Manufacturing
The term “tool and die” reflects the integration of tools and dies in manufacturing. While tools can encompass hand tools, power tools, and cutting implements, dies are unique in that they are dedicated to shaping materials, such as stamping, forging, and molding. The high overlap in skills between toolmakers and diemakers has made the two terms nearly interchangeable on factory floors.
